Understanding Your Treatment

What is Suboxone?

Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone) is an FDA-approved medication used to treat opioid use disorder. It comes as a daily film or tablet placed under the tongue.

It works by reducing cravings and preventing withdrawal symptoms, allowing you to focus on what matters most — your recovery, your family, and your life. Suboxone has been prescribed safely for decades and remains the most widely used medication-assisted treatment in the country.

Why Suboxone

Benefits of Suboxone treatment.

A proven path to stability and recovery

Same-Day Start

You may begin medication at your very first visit. No waiting lists, no weeks of appointments before treatment starts. When you're ready, we're ready.

Proven Track Record

Suboxone is the most widely prescribed MAT medication in the United States, backed by decades of clinical evidence showing it helps people achieve and maintain recovery.

Flexible Dosing

Available as a daily sublingual film or tablet, with dosing adjusted to your individual needs. Your provider works with you to find the right balance.

Covered by Insurance

Virginia Medicaid and most commercial insurance plans cover Suboxone treatment. We verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises.

The Science

How Suboxone works.

Suboxone is a partial opioid agonist. That means it activates opioid receptors in the brain just enough to prevent withdrawal symptoms and reduce cravings — without producing the full high associated with opioid misuse.

The naloxone component acts as a safety net. If Suboxone is taken as prescribed (under the tongue), naloxone has minimal effect. But if someone attempts to misuse the medication by injecting it, naloxone blocks the opioid receptors and discourages misuse.

Together, these two ingredients help stabilize brain chemistry so you can think clearly, function normally, and focus on building the life you want.

More Than Medication

Counseling makes the difference.

Suboxone stabilizes your brain chemistry, but recovery is about more than medication. Regular counseling helps you understand your triggers, build coping skills, repair relationships, and create a life worth living.

At Healtop, counseling and medication management happen under one roof. No separate appointments across town. No repeating your story to a stranger. Sidney and the team know you, your journey, and your goals. That continuity of care makes all the difference.

Common Questions

You're not the first to ask.

Honest answers to the questions we hear most

There is no set timeline. Some people take Suboxone for months, others for years. The goal is to keep you stable and in recovery. We will never pressure you to taper before you're ready. Treatment length is a decision you and your provider make together based on how you're doing.
No. Your addiction treatment records are completely confidential and receive the highest level of federal privacy protection under both HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2. This means your records cannot be shared with employers, family members, or even other healthcare providers without your explicit written consent. Your recovery is your business.
Yes. Once you are stabilized on your dose, most people work, drive, and live their daily lives normally. Some people experience mild drowsiness when first starting, but this typically resolves within the first few days. Suboxone is designed to help you function, not impair you.
That's more common than you might think, and it doesn't mean treatment can't work for you. Previous attempts may not have had the right dose, the right support, or the right timing. At Healtop, we combine medication with regular counseling and build a plan around your specific situation. If Suboxone isn't the right fit, we'll work with you to find what is.
